Zambia banned the use of foreign currencies

Zambia has banned the quoting and pricing of goods and services in Zambia in foreign currency. Those found violating the law will face a prison sentence of up to 10 years. According to the Statutory Instrument (SI) #33 of 2012 on 07 May 2012 which came into effect on 18 May 2012, all hotels, car hire firms and tour operators in Zambia are required to quote the prices of the goods and services in Zambia Kwacha, the local currency. Airlines and travel agencies operating in Zambia are also required to quote, sell and receive payment for tickets and other transaction in Zambian Kwacha.
All advertisement on websites for companies with a global outreach can still be shown in a foreign currency, so that customers can understand the pricing structure and are able to compare with similar services. However, any quotation by a company for any of its products or services must be in Zambian Kwacha and a guiding exchange rate should be given for such quotation.
  • Foreign currencies are no longer accepted in Zambia, but you can still pay for your accommodation/tour in certain foreign currencies from abroad
  • Visas for Zambia are still available in US$
  • As Zambian Kwacha are not available outside Zambia, it is advised to change cash using your bank card/bureau de change at the airport/right after you have entered the country
