South Africa: 32 rhinos killed by poachers so far in 2013

According to the latest statistics released by the South African Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) and South African National Parks (SANParks), South Africa has already lost 32 rhinos to illegal poaching since the beginning of 2013. 18* rhinos were poached in the Kruger National Park, six rhinos got illegally killed in the North West and five in KwaZulu-Natal. Two rhinos were poached in Limpopo and one in Mpumalanga.
13 people have been arrested in relation to rhino poaching in 2013 so far.

Latest rhino poaching figures (as of 24 January 2013):  
  • Kruger National Park (SANParks) - 18 rhinos poached
  • Mapungubwe National Park (SANParks) - 0 rhino poached
  • Gauteng - 0 rhino poached
  • Limpopo - 2 rhinos poached
  • Mpumalanga - 1 rhino poached
  • North-West Province - 6 rhinos poached
  • Eastern Cape - 0 rhino poached
  • Free State - 0 rhino poached
  • KwaZulu Natal - 5 rhinos poached
  • Western Cape - 0 rhino poached
  • Northern Cap - 0 rhino poached

The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) has urged members of the public to report incidents of rhino poaching or any tip-offs that could lead to arrests and prevention of illegal killings to 0800 205 005.

*The Kruger National Park figures includes carcasses of rhinos killed in 2012, but only discovered in 2013.
